The Seaman’s Burial ground near the Gosport Navy Yard, Gosport, (now Norfolk) Virginia, may no longer exist due to expansion of the Naval shipyard. It is not likely the same as the United States Navy Hospital Cemetery that, according to hospital historian and unofficial cemetery caretaker Ted Conaway, had its first burial in 1838.

The Gosport Shipyard was founded on November 1, 1767 on the western shore of the Elizabeth River in Norfolk County in the Virginia Colony. The shipyard fell under Confederate control during the Civil War. Following the recapture of Norfolk and Portsmouth, and the shipyard, by the Union forces, the name of the shipyard was changed to Norfolk after the county in which it was located, outside the city limits of Portsmouth at the time.
