The Old Jewish Cemetery in Worms, called Heiliger Sand (Holy Sands) is generally considered to be the oldest surviving Jewish cemetery in Europe, although the Jewish burials in the Roman Catacombs predate it by about a 1,000 years.

The oldest tombstone still legible dates from 1058/59. The cemetery contains about 2,000 burials, and was in general use until a new cemetery was opened in 1911 outside the city, at Worms-Hochheim. The last burials at the "Holy Sands" were in the 1930s.

Some notable burials include Rabbi Meir of Rothenburg (1215-1293); Alexander ben Solomon Wimpfen (died 1307); Nathan ben Issak (died 1333)and Rabbi Yaakov ben Moshe Levi Moelinca, called Maharil (1365-1427.)
