Search William and Nell Lear Farm (Clifty):

This cemetery has three inscribed tombstones as identified by Ralph Lear Holman in 1991. He estimated another 30 unmarked graves or impressions in the earth. Some marked by field stones. The cemetery was on the farm owned by Wm J. Lear and wife Nell Lear in Clifty. The land was deeded from George Lear Jr., (son of George Lear and Nancy Sheffield) to Wm Franklin Lear and Charles J. Lear. Wm Franklin is the father of Wm J. Lear. This land may be the original home of Conrad Lear of the Rev. War (ancestor to all native Lears in Todd and Muhl. Co., KY) and/or his son George Lear and George's wife Nancy Sheffield. There may be three generations of impoverished Lear's buried here who could not afford tombstones. The reason why many historic Todd County Lear's have no tombstone found is because they are buried here without one. Wm F Lear and C F Lear obtained 417 acres from heirs of Henry Lear and 117 acres from Geo. Lear Jr. CJ sold his half interest to WF in 1906. The two land tracts are adjacent and seem to be on both sides of Long Ck with the creek as a divider. Access is through a locked gate and across the creek to the cemetery.

George and Conrad Lear are listed next to each other on the 1830 Todd Co. census. In 1833 Conrad Lear applied for, and received, a Rev War pension. Payments stopped in 1837. He was the trumpeter under direct command of Wm Washington of 3rd Virginia 6th Co. Wm and Conrad were in the troops of Gen George Washington in the battles of Boston, NY (Harlem Heights), Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine and Germantown. Conrad crossed the Delaware River twice with George Washington's troops.

Conrad also lived next to Ephraim Sheffield (Rev. War pension from N. Carolina) Ephraim was the father of Nancy Sheffield (above). Both Ephraim and Conrad may be in unmarked graves in this cemetery. Perhaps they can get military tombstones.
