During the Civil War Folly Island was occupied by some 11,000 men. The South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology removed 17 individuals. After a period of study, the soldiers were reburied with ceremony at Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, SC. The soldiers were members of the 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and the 1st North Carolina Colored Infantry, known collectively as “Wild’s African Brigade.” By BluMoKitty
