Search Wainer Indian Cemetery:

The Wainer Indian Cemetery is located off of Drift Road and north of Clyde's Way. It was located on the former property of the family of Michael Wainer, a Dartmouth Indian, and his wife Mary Cuffe (sister of Capt. Paul Cuffe). The exact number of burials in the cemetery is unknown, although there may be at least 42 based on the research of the Westport Historic Private and Public Cemeteries Project. It is unknown if Dartmouth Indians were buried on this site prior to the Wainer family in the 18th century, or if it is specific to the Wainer family, who lived on the property in from the 18th-20th centuries. It is probable that the majority of the Wainer descendants who remained in Westport were buried here. The cemetery remains on private property and is overgrown.

The Westport Historic Private and Public Cemeteries Project identifies two private cemeteries located beside each other which probably combine to make the Wainer Indian Cemetery. The first cemetery, whose address is given as 1612B Drift, is identified as having 20 unmarked stones (fieldstones) and no gravestones. The second cemetery, whose address is given as 14 Clyde's Way, is identified as having 22 unmarked stones (fieldstones) and no gravestones.

This is also probably the cemetery referenced in Katharine Stanley Hall and Mary Hannah Sowle, The Village of Westport Point, Massachusetts (New Bedford, Mass.: E. Anthony & Sons, 1914), p. 8: "There is an Indian burial ground not far up the Drift Road."
