The church stands derelict among wheat fields and pastureland north of Havre, Montana. The Cottonwood Lutheran Cemetery was created in 1919 on a 5.75 acre parcel of land purchased as a burying ground for $86.25. In 1922, the congregation bought the Presbyterian Church on the Wild Horse Trail near Havre. They repaired and improved it and dedicated it as the Cottonwood Lutheran Church on 29 June 1924. Regular services were held there until October 1951, when the decision was made not to hold services during the winter; summer services continued for two years. After 1953, the church was abandoned and most of the congregation became members of the First Lutheran Church in Havre.
