The churchyard is only about 50' x 50'. The church appears to be active and well used.
The community of San Miguel was established in 1794 on the Spanish land grant, "San Miguel del Vado", sometimes seen as "San Miguel del Bado." San Miguel is located at the principal crossing of the Santa Fe Trail, and was considered a port of entry, as caravans traveling to Santa Fe stopped to pay custom taxes to the Mexican government. Construction of the church began in 1806.
The cemetery associated with the church is about 1,000 ft to the NW, just S of County Road B40.
