Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in 1897. According to the church deed, in 1920 church trustees purchased this property to use "as a church building site, and cemetery and for use by the Birmingham, Montgomery & Gulf Power Company for the re-interment of bodies removed from the cemeteries in the Cherokee Bluffs Reservoir."
The power company moved graves from historically black Old Bethel Cemetery to Bethel M E Church as Lake Martin formed. According to Martin Dam Cemetery records located in the Alabama Power Archives at 600 North 18th Street in Birmingham, Alabama, only five Old Bethel graves had formal headstones. Fortunately the Archives include 280 names of people who were moved, though no dates were preserved. Five names from Old Bethel currently appear on grave stones in Benson-Bethel: Lucy Adamson, Susie G. Adamson, Sam Blount, Mary Kelly, and Isaac Milner.
About the 1970's, Bethel merged with Benson Church and took its current name, Benson-Bethel United Methodist Church.
