A log church was built in 1822 on land donated by Benjamin Smith Benton from part of his farm which included a small family cemetery. It was originally called Benton's Church. In the early 1840s the name was changed to the Mt. Lebanon Methodist Episcopal Church. In the 1860s the congregation had outgrown the church so they moved to a new building in Damascus and changed their name to the Damascus Methodist Episcopal Church (later changed to Damascus Methodist Church).

The original log church had wooden siding added and was used as a one room school until the early 1900s when it was demolished and a newer school was built there. That newer school was later converted to a dwelling and is still used as such. The cemetery at the old church continued to be used as a family cemetery until the late 1880s. At some point the cemetery was demolished and all markers were removed. Only the stone for Benjamin Smith Benton was saved and it was moved to the Damascus Methodist Church for safe keeping. There are no markers now for any of the graves.
