The U.S. Army originally established the Standing Rock Cantonment in 1863 and later renamed it Fort Yates in 1878. The development of the town around the post also became known as Fort Yates and presently exists in Sioux County, North Dakota. The Army post and fort were decommissioned in 1903. In the fall of 1908 all of the remains buried in the post cemetery were disinterred and reintered in several other cemeteries as described on a note attached to the original post register as follows:
“73 in Keokuk, Iowa National Cemetery
9 in Catholic Cemetery Fort Yates
2 in Congregational Cemetery Fort Yates
1 in Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, National Cemetery
The remains of Sitting Bull were left interred at Fort Yates.”

In 1953, Sitting Bull’s family authorized his remains to be exhumed and transferred to a grave site overlooking the Missouri River near his birthplace at Mobridge, South Dakota.
