Located in the Diocese of Monmouth and sometimes referred to as St. Woolos Cathedral. The name "Woolos" is a corruption of Gwynllyw, the 5th-century Welsh saint who first founded a religious establishment on the site. The Normans around 1080 made modifications to a Saxon Church that was on the site. The Norman church was subsequently damaged and rebuilt when it was attacked in 1402 by the forces of Owain Glyndŵr. Since then it was been partially rebuilt and enlarged several times leading up to the present.
