Listed as Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery No. 2 in "Talladega County, Alabama Tombstone Inscriptions of All Known Cemeteries 1700's to 1987", c. 1989 by Joseph W. and Francis S. Upchurch. There were forty-two burials identified here during a 1984 survey, with the first interment in 1957. An "Application for Headstone or Marker", DD Form 1330, from 1961 for an interment here reflects the location was known as Mt. Zion Cemetery in Winterboro.

First known as the Ashley Church, after Rev. John Ashley (1779-1841) who donated the land and served as minister. Blacks and whites worshiped together here until 1868 when the white congregation donated the church building and established a new church on land owned by George Riser a quarter mile south. The black congregation renamed their church the Mt. Zion Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. The white congregation initially used a temporary wood frame building until completion of a new church building in 1898, which was called Riser's United Methodist Chapel. This church history was provided in a letter by the granddaughter of George Riser, Ms. Julia Paralee Riser, to the Talladega County Historical Association in 1979.

Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery No. 1 in the Upchurch compilation, known as Mount Zion CME Church Cemetery AKA "Risers Chapel CME Cemetery" on this website, is across the road from Mount Zion CME Church and contained approximately twenty-five marked burials with interment dates between 1908 and 1967. Several distinctive Mosaic Templars of America (MTA) marble headstones are directly in front of the church. The MTA was an African American fraternal organization which provided marble stones to its members, formed in local "Chambers" in half the states of the nation, from 1914 thru 1931.
