Burn Church Cemetery is adjacent to the James Island Presbyterian Church Cemetery next to Folly Rd. The two cemeteries are separated by a hedge of azalea bushes.

James Island Presbyterian Church was founded in the early 1700’s. Before the Civil War, slaves sat in the balcony as plantation owners and other white parishioners worshipped from the main floor.

During the Civil War the building fell victim to flames from surrounding fields. After the war, some of the black parishioners decided to build another church about a half mile from the original church, where they had worshipped and where their ancestors were buried. The new church, St. James Presbyterian Church, is located at 1314 Secessionville Rd. at the corner of Fort Johnson Rd. The James Island Presbyterian Church was rebuilt on the same site.

The “Old Slave Cemetery” next to the James Island Presbyterian Church became known as “Burnt Church Cemetery”. Currently, the cemetery is recorded as “Burn Church Cemetery” or “Burn Cemetery” on death certificates.

The Burn Church Cemetery was registered with Find a Grave in 2016. Memorials were created, researched and posted through the work of Stephen C. Petit, Sr. and Kathy Missel. They discovered the cemetery while researching graves in the James Island Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
