Mennonite families began to move into the Graysville-Stephenfield area in the mid-1920's. Some of the families came directly from Europe; most were from southern Manitoba communities. Worship was held in homes. When numbers were sufficient to form a congregation, various Mennonite denominations joined for worship.
Arrangements were made to use Orr United Church on SW-10-06-06-W1 [near 49.460213,-98.202262]. In 1953, the Orr Church building was purchased by the Bergthaler Mennonites and moved to (its present location) on PR 245. (Source: The Rural Municipality of Dufferin 1880-1980, p 221 [Adapted]]
This small, peaceful cemetery is located in an area west of the church, enclosed on three sides by evergreen trees. Graves are laid out in rows with grave markers at the head of the plot, facing in the traditional eastern direction in anticipation of Christ's coming at the Last Judgement. (Adapted from information provided by the Carman / Dufferin Municipal Heritage Committee)
The first burial in this cemetery in the Rural Municipality of Dufferin occurred in 1957. (Source: Manitoba Historical Society [Adapted])
Dominion Land Survey coordinates: LSD13-03-04-06-W1
A part of the story of the town and its inhabitants from the early days of European settlement through roughly 1980 is told in the volume "The Rural Municipality of Dufferin 1880-1980", especially on page 221. A digital version of this and many other Manitoba local history books can be found online in the University of Manitoba Digital Collections. There is also a list of such books organized by district and town name on the Manitoba Historical Society's website on their page entitled "Finding Aid: Manitoba Local History Books".
