Quarantine Island and Cemetery.

This Quarantine station was in operation from 1863 until 1924.

Description of Island.
It is a hilly location consisting of 15 Hectares.

It was primarily in use for immigrants with infectious diseases, during the WW1 soldiers with VD where sent there with again returning soldiers from WW1 who had contracted influenza.
These soldiers who died on the island were later disinterred to the Anderson Bay Cemetery in 1947.

The only major headstone still visible is that of the Dougall family of which John Dougall who had been appointed the first Island's Keeper.

Half of the burials in this Cemetery are children.
