Anyox was the largest copper mine of its day in the British Empire. Production started in 1914 and it was almost wiped out by forest fires in 1923. The town has been abandoned since 1935. There was another major fire in 1942. The sulphur from the smelter created an environmental disaster and probably is the cause of the disproportionate number of new born and still born deaths. It was generally found that there are no BC Registration numbers for young deaths. The 1918 Spanish flu pandemic is evident in the number of deaths at that time. The graveyard is overgrown. According to The Alice Arm and Anyox Herald (1921-1935) newspaper files, cumulatively Anyox accounted for 480 births, 320 deaths and 160 marriages between 1914 and 1935. To Armistice Day, 1932, there are 12 interments of veterans of the Great War. The cemetery records have not been located. Rather the listings here are derived from the Ancestry. com records, compared to the BC Indexes to Deaths (1872-1993) and a few entries which were, for some unknown reason, in neither but were listed in either the Herald or as fatals in the Canada - British Columbia Mine Accident Index. Death Registrations for Granby, Granby Bay and Bonanza Mine are also included. Interments were assumed to be in Anyox (or ‘Hidden Water’ in the Tsimshian tongue), unless information to the contrary was located.
