This cemetery site is located on private property at 1030 Jacks Shop Road in Rochelle VA, Madison County.

Several graves are located in a grove of trees near the large red barn.

The property was originally deeded by King George to Thomas Rucker Jr. in 1734. Rucker in turn gave some of the property to his daughter Mary Rucker and her husband, William Pendleton Herndon as a wedding gift and it remained in the Herndon family for several generations. (Copy of deed, in calligraphy, at Orange County Historical Society in the Lee Haywood Herndon file; Lee was one of Sonoro and James Henry Herndon's children).

Two of those buried there were Stockdell sisters, Fannie F. and Mary A. "Mollie". Fannie is listed in the 1880 Census as being 15 and the granddaughter of Esther Herndon (72) and living with her. Esther Ferneyhough Herndon was Sonoro Esther Herndon Herndon's mother and the Stockdell sisters were Sonoro's nieces. Sonoro's sister Elizabeth A. Herndon, married Benjamin Simon Hardin Stockdell and they had five daughters. (The 1880 Census also shows Esther's neighbor as being Benjamin Stockdell (53), wife Elizabeth (52) and daughters Mathilda (24), Elizabeth (18) and Sarah (12). Two doors away from Benjamin were James Henry and Sonora Herndon with their children Alonzo (19), George T. (16), Sophia (13), James F. (8), Lena Fannie (6) and Lee Haywood (1).)

The 1910 Census shows the two Stockdells, Fannie (44) and Mary (52), living together -- younger sister Fannie as Head of Household and a seamstress, and Mary as housekeeper (perhaps Mary was disabled or ill?). The 1920, 1930 and 1940 Census records show Fannie living alone in Madison, Locust Dale as a seamstress. Fannie's listed ages for all Census records do not reflect even ten-year increments (ages shown include 44, 51, 63 and 75 from 1910-1940) but it appears that she was born in about 1865, if she was indeed 15 in 1880. Mary was said to have been born in 1858.

It is thought that James Henry's brother Robert is buried there too.

The property and gravesite were surveyed again on March 11, 1990 by William von Raab (property owner), Earl W. Estes, Jr. and Abbott Herndon. At that time they determined there were approximately 12 fieldstone graves and the slab for Sonoro and James Henry Herndon; one fieldstone had the initials "ET" scratched on it.

These survey notes were taken in 1990:
