RITTER #1
Exeter Township: From Rt. 562, Jacksonwald take the Oley Turn Pike east. The farm previously owned by Charles Breneiser is on
the right side of the road at a dip in the road before a small bridge, storage shed and Ritter Rd. In recent years part of the Breneiser
farm was subdivided for building lots. The Ritter graveyard is still on the old Breneiser property. The site is to the right and further
back than the house when you come in the driveway.
Size: 20' x 25'
History: This farm was owned by Jacob R. Ritter who was born in 1835. The original Ritter property continued across Ritter lane where another Ritter graveyard is located. [See MHBA (1909) p. 659.]
Gravemarkers and inscriptions: No tombstones remain. Montgomery reports that Ferdinand and his wife are buried in a fence comer of what is now the Charles Breneiser farm in Exeter, formerly owned by the late Benjamin Ritter, who was a son of Daniel Ritter. Berks County Deeds supports the following ownership for this Oley Turnpike property: Elizabeth Ritter to John D. Ritter, registered in 1856, Vol. 64, p. 151; John D. Ritter to Daniel S. Ritter in 1852, Vol. 59, p. 272; Daniel S. and wife Rebecca Ritter to Benjamin S. Ritter in 1867, Vol 200, p. 523; Benjamin S. Ritter to Charles Breneiser in 1892, Vol. 200, p. 523. The document from Daniel to John D. mentions a small cemetery about 20 perches near the present dwelling enclosed by a stone wall for the families of Francis, George and Francis. Ferdinand and his family are buried here at a fence comer.
Observations: Indicates 3 row of 6 graves abreast.
Site address: Oley Turnpike just west of Ritter Lane
