MATHIAS
Earl Township: On Rt. 73 traveling south from Oley before Shanesville, turn right at the fruit stand at the southeast comer of Long View. Site is located on the hill behind the back of the house at the first residence on the left back a short farm lane past the barn. House is visible from the road.
Size: 77' x 40' (estimated; weeds too high) History: Philip Mattes [sic], in 1782 recorded in Earl as "Mathew", etc. See Will book B., p. 331,1793. Jacob was one of 7 children listed in the will. (MHBA, p. 652) Datestone on the house reads Jacob and Hannah Matthias, built 1858. Site reported by township
office.
Gravemarkers and inscriptions: 5 tombstones were found in the barn and sold at the estate auction; 1 was reported to the BCAGP to be in the possession of Merritt's Antiques (a descendant was notified); stone was a duplicate (Hill Church)
Observations: There are 7 rows laying north to south on the hill directly behind the house. In row 1 there was activity for 3 abreast;
row 2, 6; row 3, 4; row 4, 5; row 6, 5; and row 7, 5.
