Marist College's origins began with the formation of St. Ann's Hermitage, a house of study for the Marist Brothers, in 1905. Later known as the Marist Normal Training School, then Marian College, the school was formally named Marist College in 1960.

The first of 48 burials occurred in 1909 and the last in 1953, after which time burials were made at the school's Esopus, NY Marist Brothers Cemetery.

Due to construction and expansion of the campus, the graves are now covered with more than 20 feet of fill-dirt. The site is now occupied by the baseball field adjacent to the McCann Recreational Center, the graves being mostly outside the right-field foul line, about 250 feet from home plate. The monument listing the 48 burials is located on the plaza in front of the McCann building.
