In an early plan from 1816 of the village of Perth in the historic Rideau Military Settlement land is shown on the North West Corner of Beckwith and Harvey Streets for a Catholic Church. Prior to 1823 the Catholic faith was served by a priest from one of the disbanded Swiss Regiments and itinerant Priests. In 1820 Construction of a wooden church, consecrated as St. Bridget's, was started on the village site.
In 1823 Father John Macdonald was appointed to the Mission of Perth and commenced recording baptisms, marriages and burials. Most burials were recorded as interred in the Perth Cemetery or the Town Cemetery referring to the Craig Street Cemetery which had sections for Catholic burials as well as members of the Anglican and Presbyterian faiths. Methodists had their own burial ground in Perth on Robinson Street.
By 1847 father John Hugh McDonagh spearheaded the erection of a new church, St. John the Baptist, at the intersection of Wilson and Church streets, completed in 1848.
By 1867 the Craig St. Cemetery was getting full and the Town proposed to close it. In 1872 the Catholic Church acquired a separate property just east of the town limits off Craig Street known as St. John's Parish Cemetery. In 1873 the Craig Street Cemetery was closed for burials.
Though most early Catholic burials were recorded as interred in the Craig Street Cemetery some are recorded as being in the Church Yard.
In the 1850s St. Bridget's Church was burnt down as part of a training exercise for the Perth firefighters and the land has since been reused.
It is unclear what the disposition of these burials in the original churchyard was. Some may have been moved to Craig Street and some abandoned.
