Stepney, Stepne or White House Farm, 406 S. Cross St, Chestertown, MD 21620 is located on the southwest edge of Chesterfield, Kent County, Maryland. The family cemetery is located south of the house. "None of the markers remain but three stones were retrieved from the creek in recent years, one being that of Joseph N Gordon who died at age 73 in 1848." Source:

There are three burial plots at White House Farm.
The Wilmer family plot was located some 50 feet north of the original house. Edmund Lusby visited the farm and pointed out where “five or six stones (were) before my father moved them” in the 1950s. Lusby plans to erect a memorial stone for the unknown number of Wilmers who may be buried there.

Historic Houses of Kent County says a spot on the south is “the burial ground.” This is the James Frisby Gordon family plot.

In a 1862 deed to James B. Ricaud (in county deed Book JKH 3, folio 215) it says “…expressly covenanted and agreed that the burial ground of the Wilmer family lying to the north of the dwelling house, and the burial ground of James F. Gordon situated in the garden and to the south of dwelling house … right of ingress and egress from the same are reserved to the respective [owners] and heirs and descendants forever.”

Lusby said, “I had the Gordon stones put back on the plot I remember. But two burial grounds - that’s news to me. The Gordon stones may have been relocated to the Wilmer family plot.

Wilmers and Gordons had slaves. Their names appear in wills and inventories. Unhappily, even the general location of the slave burying ground is lost.
