Aleksotas Jewish Cemetery is the only active Jewish cemetery around Kaunas today. It is located across the Nemunas River from the city center in a secluded area behind a run-down industrial area. It is cigar-shaped on a WNW-ESE plane measuring about 250 meters in length, 40 meters in width, and 1 hectare in land area. The topography is flat except for the southern edge which begins to curve up the wooded Aleksotas ridge. It exhibits many recent burials, has many decorated graves, and appears quite well maintained.
Judging from the dates on the monuments, Aleksotas Jewish Cemetery was established in the 1950s. It is not a Holocaust site in the sense that the Kaunas fort system – particularly the Ninth Fort – was, and it should not be confused with regular pre-WWII Jewish cemeteries – Zaliakalnis, Vilijampole, and Panemune – which were extensively ransacked during and after WWII.
An open grassy area at the western edge of the cemetery, however, has a lone monument which states that human remains from the Kaunas Jewish Ghetto Cemetery were transferred to this cemetery in 1979. The monument states that the remains are from victims of the July 1944 burning of the Jewish Ghetto by the Nazis before they evacuated Kaunas. The monument 3 km away where the Ghetto Cemetery formerly existed, however, is phrased somewhat differently, stating that remains from all deaths in the ghetto from 1941 to 1944 were transferred to Aleksotas. This leaves open a question whether the remains of the several hundred Ghetto deaths during the 1942-1943 hiatus in organized Nazi killings are in Aleksotas Jewish Cemetery or not. Photos of both monuments are among the uploaded cemetery photos.
In total, Aleksotas Jewish Cemetery contains a thousand or more monuments in good condition with inscriptions in various combinations of Hebrew, Russian and Lithuanian. This cemetery really belong under the Findagrave management of someone who can do a proper job of transcribing these monuments.
