The cemetery, also known as Friedhof am Landeskrankenhaus, is located on the grounds of the LWL-Klinikum Gütersloh, a 402-bed-hospital for psychiatric patients, which was established in 1919 as the "Provinzialheil- und Pflegeanstalt Gütersloh". It's first director, Dr. Hermann Simon, is buried there among other physicians and patients, it contains about 2000 graves. The hospital was the site of "euthanasia experiments" during the Nazi terror. 1017 of these patients were deemed "unworthy" to be treated and marked for deportation, eventually being killed in a concentration camp. A memorial for those victims was erected in 2014.
