The Wahstao Mission Cemetery (A Light on a Hill) is also known as St. Johns Cemetery today, and is located in the Low Level District in the County of Smoky Lake. At one time, the hamlets of Bellis and Edwand would have been the nearest services. The rural location of the Wahstao Mission Cemetery is:
Legal Land Description: NE 32-58-15-W4
Township Road 590 and Range Road 154
In 1904 the Woman's Missionary Society of the Methodist Church in Canada established the Wahstao Mission School and residence on the land. [It was founded by Reta Edmonds and Jessie Munro for the purpose of working with Ukrainian women and children. Their mission was located fifteen miles east of Pakan, and they operated a school and boarding school].
Women missionaries from Central Canada were trained and sent by the Woman's Missionary Society to provide support, educational and health services to the families of immigrant settlers.
The mission building to the southeast of the cemetery was removed in 1937.
A monument, denoting the Wahstao Mission Cemetery as a heritage site, was erected June 24, 2012. The plaque was dedicated by the Heritage Resources Committee - with a deep appreciation for the commitment of those many mission workers, and in acknowledgment of the lives of those, known and unknown who rest here.
