Sandy Hill Cemetery opened in Lower Town in 1844 on land granted by the Ordnance Department. Some remains from the earlier Barrack's Hill Cemetery were transferred here after it opened. It was closed to burials in 1878 and starting about 1873 many of the remains interred there were transferred, mostly to the then new Beechwood and Notre Dame Cemeteries. The land lay idle for many years. In 1911 the city of Ottawa recorded the monuments that were still remaining and the land became McDonald Gardens park and is bounded by Cobourg and Wurtemburg streets. There were four sections to the old cemetery from East to West: Episcopalian (Anglican), Presbyterian, Wesleyan Methodist and, Roman Catholic. A map from 1859 shows that present day Charlotte Street bisected the cemetery between the Presbyterian and Methodist sections.
