It has been noted in history that there are at least three locations in which Civil War soldiers who died at the Jeffersonville Civil War Hospitals were buried. One is Play Square located on Mulberry Street across from the new walking bridge; another is located on the actual grounds where the old hospital once stood (the old Masonic Bldg.); and the other is under the baseball fields behind Parkview Middle School. The original Civil War hospital was named Camp Joe Holt and was located close to the Mulberry Street burial grounds. There is a very nice memorial at that location. When the facilities needed to be enlarged to accommodate the growing number of wounded, a new hospital was erected at the site of the Old Masonic Building. This became known as the Jefferson Civil War Hospital.
Many remains were not claimed as it was near impossible to transport them very far. Even when embalming became the norm, it was often too expensive for most, and there were many families who had no news of the death of a loved one until after he was buried in an unmarked grave. These soldiers, whether North or South fought for what they believed. It is not for us to judge them. They do deserve our respect.
It is my intention to list the names even though I have no idea in which cemetery they are buried. They deserve a place of recognition. These names and information was extracted from "The U.S. Registers of Deaths of Volunteers 1861-1865". If I find a soldier has been buried in another location, I will gladly correct that information.
