The church of St Thomas was built in 1831-2 in the 'Commissioners Gothic' or 'lancet' style by architect Edward Haycock of Shrewsbury. It was built in response to the growing population of workers to the collieries and the near-by British Ironworks, opened in 1823. It was consecrated on 10/11/1832 as a chapel-of-ease for Pontypool, becoming a parish in its own right in 1844. Reseated in 1869, it was restored in 1974, become disused in 2004 and was boarded up in 2011.
The churchyard surrounding the former church lies to the east side of Commercial Road at its junction with Bluett's Road. The churchyard is ‘closed' to further burials. Since the closure of the church, the churchyard has become completely overgrown and access to the graves is limited.
