Add PhotosHamilton Township #1. Ancient Mercerville Graveyard, northeast of Mercerville
Age: Pre-1800
Use status: Extinct
Location: Woodward & Hageman, 809: "Previous to 1786 most of the dead in this township were buried at Crosswicks, ... White Horse, and in a graveyard near Mercerville, on the road to Edinburg, on land now owned [ca. 1883] by Samuel Hughes."
Comments: W & H continues: "This [graveyard became] neglected, and over fifty years ago it was desecrated by being plowed over, and all traces of it have long since disappeared; yet beneath that sod lie the bones of many of the pioneers of New Jersey, among [them] the Rossels. This graveyard was very little used after the churches were built at Hamilton Square, and no one living now ever remembers seeing an interment made there. The monuments in it were but field-stones. There has probably been no interment made there since 1800."
Note: Please feel free to contact me relative to this burial ground. No record of inscriptions here is known to exist. -Joseph R. Klett (member #47554493)
