Search St Nicholas Church:

St Nicholas was built as the parish church of Abbotsbury in the late 14th or early 15th century to replace a Benedictine Abbey of the same name that was dismantled by Henry VIII when many Catholic institutions were dispensed with during the establishment of the Church of England. Consequently, much of the building stone used in the construction of the church was salvaged from the old abbey. The oldest parts of the building and grounds are the tower, which contains six bells dating from 1636 to 1773, and the north wall of the old abbey, of which only the foundations remain near the west entrance. The church was extensively restored in 1885 when some parts of the building were removed and others added.
