The Hord Cemetery is named for the first Hord families to settle in western North Carolina. Two brothers, James and John Hord, came to this area from Mecklenburg Co. Virginia between 1816 and 1820. Both brothers are listed on the 1820 census for Rutherford Co. NC; this area became part of the newly created Cleveland Co. in 1841. John Hord and family eventually moved on to Tennessee, but James Hord's family remained in the area, leaving many, many descendants.
This small family plot is abandoned with no readable markers. The 1939 WPA cemetery census record states the cemetery has 23 unmarked graves. Its location was described as being "approximately 4 miles south of Lawndale, NC and about 1.5 miles west of the Lawndale-Shelby Rd. It is situated on a knoll about 300 yds. northwest of the old Hord homeplace on the south side of the north prong of Harris Creek."
It is about 1000 ft. NNW of 3420 Robert Cornwell Rd. and about 500 ft. south of Big Harris Creek in an island of trees surrounded by farmland. It is very thick with small trees and vines, but also covered in periwinkle. Twelve field stones were found on a visit Sept. 6, 2015. They were flat and unmarked, but most were still upright in the ground.
Many thanks to Ned Cash for locating this cemetery and many thanks to Joe Scism for allowing us on his property.
