Original cemetery of the Coranderrk Aboriginal Station, on the traditional land of the Wurundjeri people. Coranderrk was founded in 1863 and became a last refuge for other dislocated indigenous people driven from their own lands. Assimulation policies forced so-called 'half-caste' Aboriginals off the station, and the steady decline caused the closing of Coranderrk in 1923. When the station was gazetted for Soldier Settlement from the two World Wars, none of the former residents received the land that was previously their home. Only this 1/2 acre cemetery was given back to five Kulin tribes of Central Victoria.
