In 1741, the church was divided by the "Old Side – New Side" controversy, and a new church was organized by those of the "New Side," bearing the name of "The Second Congregation of Upper Octorara," over which the Reverend Andrew Sterling was pastor from 1747 to 1765. In 1768 the divisions in the church were healed, and the two churches of Upper Octorara became again one. The church edifice which had been used by the 'New Side" was sold and removed. An old graveyard still marks the spot where it stood.
The small burial ground at the New Side church was used only from the 1750s through the 1860s for only a very small set of people. All contemporary burials are at the Upper Octorara Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
As told by the cemetery's current caretaker, at the time of internment fieldstones were often used as headstones and markers for the graves; subsequently many burials in this small cemetery are not marked by name.
