Add PhotosThis is the entrance gate to B'nai Amoona Cemetery, Old Section. The pillars were part of the old Fagin Building in downtown St. Louis, where the Arcade Building now stands. Congregant Philip Miller purchased the red granite columns from the demolition site in 1902 and had them removed to the cemetery where they still stand, providing dignity to the entrance of the cemetery. The top capstone of the left column (quite worn) says SHEERITH. The top capstone of the right column (quite worn) says ISRAEL. This was the original name of the cemetery. The Miller mausoleum is shown in the background of the cemetery entrance photo. Information source: Congregation B’nai Amoona web site.
Description: This cemetery was originally called Sheerith Israel and is often posted as Mt. Sheerith or Mt. Israel on death certificates. The fence that borders the western edge of this acreage is parallel to the North & South Road side of the cemetery. Row 1 of the graves follows this fence edge. The rows then progress from west to east. The grave numbers progress from South to North sequentially in each row. This project completed by Steve Weinreich. Contact [email protected]
