Add PhotosThis cemetery, also known as the Oldale Cemetery after a school that was nearby, was established as and is known as the Newdale Cemetery, roadside signage reflecting that fact. It is often confused with the later Newdale Municipal Cemetery located just north of the nearby town of Newdale, Manitoba.
Owned and managed by the RM of Oakview, though inquiries are handled by a local caretaker.

The formation of the Newdale cemetery was a project among the early settlers of the district. The men of the community decided to buy a piece of land for the cemetery; and chose as the site a rolling hill on the SE 1/4 of section 30-15-20-W1. A space was reserved at the front entrance with the thought in mind that at some time a church might be erected there. This plan never materialized and more recently, some of these plots have been sold. The rolling approach to the entrance gateway has been admired by many passers-by.

Earliest known burial: 1869. This is the final resting place for many of the early pioneers of the community.
There are well-trimmed evergreens along the north and east, and recently the south & west fence has been replaced with a new woven wire fence, and the ground has been worked ready for the planting of new trees.
The cemetery lies in a rather historical setting. Just to the south, on the north-east corner of section 19-15-20 is a stone cairn. This is on the site of one of the early schools but also acts as a memorial for one of the early churches which was a short distance south. The plaque reads: "ST.ANDREW`S CHURCH Presbyterian Church 1893-1925 United 1925-1950 Located 1/2 mile south NW-20-15-20-W1 / OLDALE SCHOOL #265 1883-1949".
To the north of the cemetery is a large white sign which reads: "NE-30-15-20-W1 Site of NEWDALE POST OFFICE 1881-1905 / COOK BRO. TRADING POST 1878-1885 / NEWDALE SCHOOL #12 / 1878 EDWARD COOK 1884 / 1884 J. L. & ELIZA COOK 1907 / 1907 ANDREW & SARAH (COOK) ANDERSON 1951 / 1951 HAROLD & ISABEL (WADDELL) COOK 1971 / 1971 DUNCAN & AUDREY WADDELL"
This was where the town of Newdale had its early beginnings, but when the railroad came through it bypassed the town, so Newdale started over again, this time by the railroad. These memorials are a reminder of the early history of this area.

A free digital version of this and many other Manitoba local history books can be found online in the University of Manitoba Digital Collections. There is also a list of such books organized by district and town name on the Manitoba Historical Society's website on their page entitled "Finding Aid: Manitoba Local History Books".
A list of burials in this cemetery is available from the Manitoba Genealogical Society (reference #0925), transcribed by a member or members in 1995. Also available to MGS members is a searchable online database named the "MGS Manitoba Name Index" (or MANI). Some additional information is contained in the 1996 MGS publication "Carved in Stone: Manitoba Cemeteries and Burial Sites" (revised edition, Special Projects Publication, 106 pages).
