"This little cemetery in the woods recalls a time when private graveyards abounded. Follow the path through the old chestnut allee and discover this secret gem tucked beneath towering oaks and elms. The headstones date from the 18th century when the Pell family occupied the manor house on this land. Descendants erected a fence and memorial posts in 1891, shortly after the New York City Parks Department bought the property from the Bartows.
The large weather-beaten center monument is hard to decipher today. Added in 1862, it says:
"This stone is placed in token of respect for the memory of and to mark the place where lie buried the mortal remains of several descendants of John Pell, who was born in the year 1643 and died in the year 1700, the son of Rev. John Pell, D.D. of Essex, in England, and the nephew of Thomas Pell, the first proprietor of the Lordship and Manor of Pelham, born in the year 1603 land died in the year 1669."
