The Union cemetery was established in 1905 for the African-American community of Carlisle, when the Lincoln Cemetery in Carlisle was being closed. Headstones from the Lincoln Cemetery were moved to the Union Cemetery, although the bodies were not re-interred, only the headstones moved and a memorial plaque place in 1974 in the Lincoln Cemetery with names inscribed.
