The Rapid City Indian School operated from 1898 until 1933, as part of the government's attempt to assimilate Native American children into American society.
In 1939, the Sioux Sanitarium was built on the site. It treated Native Americans with tuberculosis. That institution closed in the 1960s.
The grounds are currently home to the Sioux San Hospital.
According to asylumprojects.org, "The hospital still has numerous, unmarked graves around the campus; not only from the TB patients, but also from the Indian children."
