Kilnalahan Abbey is located in the shadow of the Sliabh Aughty Mountain and Lough Derg.
Christianity was first preached in the area by the sixth century Saint Feichin.
A local Norman knight, John de Cogan created a charterhouse for the French Carthusian order in Abbey around 1252 who were the founders of the monastery here. The Carthusian Order remained in Ireland only for another 150 years and were succeeded by the Knight Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem in Abbey, and by 1400 the Fransiscan Order appear to have been in possession of the site and remain associated with the site till the present day.
The upheaval that occurred during and after the Elizabethan period took its toll on the monastery and its condition deteriorated. The friars left the monastery in 1698 under religious duress but reappeared after 1711 and had a community of about five by 1766, only to see them finally leave at the end of the eighteenth century.
