Bailey Family Cemetery
Cretcher, Saline County, Missouri, USA
Driving directions:
From Highway 20 west of Marshall, turn south on Route EE. Drive 3 3/4 miles south to 170 Trail, intersecting from the west. (170 Trail is the fifth gravel road intersecting on the west from Highway 20.) Turn west on 170 Trail and drive for 1.2 miles to where 317 Road intersects and turn south approximately 4/5 mile. Before the 317 Road turns a corner to the west, there is a farm lane intersecting on the east. Take the farm lane that leads to farm buildings with a row of grain bins and continue past the bins to the cemetery.
The cemetery is 5 3/4 miles north of I-70, but the driving distance is somewhat longer because of curves and jogs in Route E. From I-70 drive north on Route E to 170 Trail , turn west on 170 and follow the above directions from that point
Examination of land patent information shows several Baileys reported to be buried in the cemetery obtained land patents in Township 49N, Range 22W, Section 9, the Section diagonally northeast of Section 17. James L. Bailey obtained a land patent in Section 9 in 1854 for the NE¼NE¼. Also in 1854 he jointly with Nathaniel Massie obtained the SE¼NE¼ of Section 9.
John D. Bailey obtained his land patent 4/2/1860 in Section 9, the W½SE¼ and the SE¼SE¼.
Reportedly families buried include include Bailey, Martin, Sims, Maupin, Miller, Page, Taliaferro and Prichett. The 1876 plat map shows the Baileys in place surrounded by neighbors with names like Maupin, Sims, Taliaferro, Miller, Martin, and Page. By 1876, the Bailey holdings were changed on the landscape from the original patents and extending into adjoining Section 4 to the north. By the 1896 plat, Bailey holdings extended west into Section 8, and L. C. Neal land abutted in both Sections 8 and 9. Reportedly a Dr. Lewis Neal deeded the cemetery land back to Jennings S. Maupin Sr., direct descendant of the Baileys. BLM patent record search gives no results listing first owners in Section 17.
