Add PhotosThe first known survey of this cemetery was done by noted genealogist Dr. Allan E. Marble on September 12, 1966. Per his usual procedure, he did not give the cemetery a name but instead assigned it an identifying number. For this cemetery, the number was 5. He recorded the location as Bellisle [incorrect spelling].
At a later date, Genweb volunteers transcribed Dr. Marble's survey notes and made them available online at Rootsweb. At that time, the volunteers named it "Bent Cemetery" but, in the cemetery index, they listed the name simply as "Bent". They recorded the location as Bellisle [incorrect spelling].
Dr. Marble transcribed 5 headstones containing 6 inscriptions. The oldest identifiable stone is from 1831. He noted that the cemetery was in poor condition in 1966.
This farm was owned by George Starratt Bent between 1871 and 1894, the year of his death. The headstone of George and his wife, Mary Ann (born Inglis) Bent, was among the headstones surveyed by Dr. Marble in 1966. That survey also included headstones for George's aunts, Miriam Bent and Arethusa (born Bent) Berteaux, wife of Charles Berteaux. It seems likely that the farm was in the Bent family prior to George's ownership because his grandparents, David Bent Jr and Ruth Parker, had headstones surveyed in this cemetery by Dr. Marble in 1966.
Following George's death in 1884, the farm was passed down by a will to his sons, Frank and Archie Bent, who had joint ownership until 1916, at which time Frank Bent is listed as the sole owner until 1934. In that year, which was 3 years before Frank Bent's death, the farm was sold to Frank's nephew, Inglis Harris Goodwin, son of Albert Elson Goodwin and Albert's wife, Amanda Starratt Bent, who was Frank Bent's sister. Inglis Goodwin owned the farm for the next 17 years until 1951, at which time it changed into the hands of the Veterans' Land Act until 1968.
The farm on which this cemetery was located in Belleisle is about half a kilometer from St. Mary's Anglican Church. The present-day address of the farm is Civic #6883, but you will no longer find the cemetery there. In March 1995, the remains were disinterred and reinterred at Wadeville Cemetery in Granville Centre, along with the headstones. It appears that the headstone of George Starratt Bent and his wife, Mary Ann (born Inglis) Bent, did not survive. However, a new headstone has been erected in their memory at Wadeville Cemetery. The other four headstones are grouped together at the back of the cemetery. These four stones are lying flat on the ground in varying degrees of deterioration.
DIRECTIONS TO NEW BURIAL LOCATION: Wadeville Cemetery is located on the south side of South Side Drive at Civic #122. An arched sign is visible from South Side Drive. Follow the long laneway from the arched sign to the cemetery.
