While the origins of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Wilmette date back to the 1870s, the planning stages for a columbarium didn't begin until decades later when parishioners requested a place for interment close to where many of life's important moments are celebrated—the church.
A design by architect H. Wallace Atkinson transformed the south lawn into a garden with gently curving walls and walkways to encourage meditation, memory, and prayer.
The new churchyard was consecrated in 1974, and the first cremains, those of Clark Quin Snyder, were interred on Pentecost Sunday, 1975.
Cremains are interred in individual plots at the base of brick walls; directly above the plots are plaques bearing names and dates.
This is an active churchyard—as is the parish of St. Augustine's, Wilmette.
