County Poor Farm Cemetery

The 1879 Illustrated Historical Atlas for Lawrence County, Missouri shows the County Poor Farm and House to be situated on 160 acres in Township 29 North, Range 25 West, in the Northwest Quarter of the Northeast Quarter of Section 27, about one and a quarter miles west and slightly north of Halltown. An early death record shows a death in Lawrence County at the "Ozark Twp. Co House," with burial at "County Cemetery." [Missouri Digital Heritage - Missouri Record of Deaths (Lawrence County), Roll Number C3774]
On the 1870 census in Ozark Twp., John J. McCormick was "Keeping Paupers & Farming." There were 8 "Paupers" living at the farm, including several who would remain there several decades and are later found on the re-established poor farm slightly south of Mt. Vernon in Mt. Vernon Twp.
On the 1880 census in Ozark Twp., W. M. Waterson was the Superintendent of the Lawrence County Poor Farm and House. There were 18 "Paupers" living there; two were older men, some were mentally or physically disabled, and two were mothers with young children.
On the 1900 census in Ozark Twp., Miles J. Clark was the Supt. of the Co. Alms House. There were 35 "Inmates" residing there. According to local historian Fred G. Mieswinkel, the County Farm was relocated to south of Mt. Vernon in 1900.
