Alter Friedhof Rothenburg

Ansbacher Strasse/Friedhofsweg
Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Landkreis Ansbach, Bavaria (Bayern), 91541 Germany
Memorials 1,311 added (100% photographed)

The old cemetery in Rothenburg is located on the eastern side of Erlbacher Strasse, across from the new one. The main gate is located at Ansbacher Strasse/Erlbacher Strasse, at its most northern tip. The cemetery is owned and maintained by the city of Rothenburg. The northern part of this cemetery is managed by the Lutheran St. Jakob congregation of Rothenburg, which had been given a perpetual lease for that part by the city in 1911. It has the oldest graves in it. There is no distinction between the church maintained area and the municipal one. The oldest graves surround the little chapel, most significantly the family plots of the von Staudt family.

Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse have decomposed naturally. The period of repose for the cemeteries in Rothenburg are 20 years for a regular burial, and 10 years for an urn burial. The family of the deceased may purchase additional time periods.
There is a WAR GRAVE SECTION with graves of soldiers and civilian victims of both world wars. Often two individuals are buried in one war grave, who are not related. War graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery and kept forever.

Other burial spots in the city are:
Alter Friedhof Rothenburg
Neuer Friedhof Rothenburg
Neuer jüdischer Friedhof Rothenburg
