Also known as the Deutscher Soldatenfriedhof Romagne-sous-Montfaucon and the Romagne-sous-Montfaucon Cimetière Militaire Allemand, the cemetery was begun in 1914 at the very beginning of the First World War but saw its heaviest use during the Battle of Verdun in 1916. It was one of the few German cemeteries to be nearly completed between the two World Wars, but a number of factors including the collapse of the mark and a shortage of foreign currency brought the work to a halt in the 1930s; consequently it was not completed until the 1970s, at which time a grove of fir trees was planted in the front part of the cemetery. However, a series of storms in recent years felled some of the trees and made visiting the graves in the rear section of the cemetery dangerous. It was decided to temporarily remove the grave markers, cut down the trees, remove a dense undergrowth of ivy, re-landscape the area, and re-install the grave markers. The German War Graves Commission (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge) and the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) are working together with the support of a number of private companies to have the area ready in time for the centennial of the beginning of World War I in 2014.
There are 1412 German and four French war dead buried here.
