Designed by architect George Taylor, St John the Evangelist Church was consecrated in January 1826. It was built by the Nicholson family of Roundhay Park and Manor, many of whom are buried in the crypt. In 2010, the building was sold by the Church of England and it is now known as the Pentecostal City Mission Church. The north side of the churchyard is still in active use. Several Lupton ancestors of Kate Middleton (the Duchess of Cambridge) are buried in the south section of the churchyard.
