The Spring Grove State Hospital cemetery is located under and on the grounds of the Weltmer Bowl, Spring Grove's athletic field. There are two. Over 500 are buried here, while another section of about 500, in a segregated lot, is located near Valley Road and Wilkens Avenue. Out of the 500 at Weltmer Bowl, there are several that are marked graves. Simple blocks with stamped aluminum name plates with dates of death.
Burials of patients remains were common place. Many were wards of the state, with no next of kin, nor family members who would be willing to reclaim, or could not afford to bury the remains on their own accord.
Burials were simple. The patient was sewn in bedsheets after pronouncement of death, and was sealed in a simple wooden box made in the Spring Grove Carpentry Shop. Patients would be moved to opposite sides of buildings facing Weltmer Bowl, and trustees would cut sod, dig graves, and place the new burial in plot, fill in graves, and return the sod. Later in the afternoon, Spring Grove's baseball team would play upon the freshly dug grave hours earlier.
The burials were ceased in the 1960's. Patient's remains were either interred at Springfield State Hospital in a mass grave, or was cremated.
As of this writing, the cemeteries are in danger of being destroyed with the redevelopment of Spring Grove State Hospital into "The Promenade", a mega mall complex that will include a subsidized housing complex, hotels, bars and restaurants.
