Camp Groce was located south east of Hempstead, TX on the eastern bank of Clear Creek. It contained four rough buildings that the Confederates used for recruits while being mustered into service. This post, when no longer used as a training camp, became the home for prisoners.
Camp Groce, located on the Liendo Plantation, was named in honor of Leonard Waller Groce who served as an office in the Confederate Army and owned the property.
The soldiers listed in this cemetery are known soldiers who either died while stationed at Camp Groce or while guarding the prisoners there. They may not be buried at Camp Groce, but in locations in the area. It is likely that many more were buried at Camp Groce, but this is the current known list based on the research of Danial F. Lisarelli.
This cemetery has no markers and the exact location is not indicated by any markers.
