A large number of burials are from the sporadic Diphtheria Epidemics of 1880-1886 and especially 1891-1896.

Many of the graves are unmarked; and some stones are broken or unreadable.

From the Coming County, NE GenWeb site: "When an epidemic of diphtheria hit this area it was said wagons came from many directions, bringing their dead to be buried. They would wait on the road until the wagon ahead was finished so they wouldn't contact the illness from them. District #14 School was built where the Schwedt Post Office was located just west of the cemetery. It was restored in 1995 by Stanton County Pioneer Cemetery Association, relatives of the ancestors buried here and concerned friends."
