The Church of St Augustine is a parish church located in Via Cairoli, next to Piazza Cavour, is in the historic center of Rimini.
It was built in the thirteenth century, originally as a church (dedicated to St John the Evangelist) of the convent of the Augustine Fathers (hence the name "St Augustine"), who later left the city because of the Napoleonic suppressions.
The original structure has seen, over the centuries, especially in the seventeenth and eighteenth century , a number of alterations, which altered some of the original features and decorations, impressing, especially within a style baroque .
The Church of St Augustine is one of the city's most impressive (especially for its bell tower), and is busy with many works of art that avvolorano the cultural value: the apse of the chapel and bell tower remain a series of frescoes depicting the Virgin Mary, the life of St John the Evangelist, and behind the high altar, a majesty of Christ and the Madonna of Rimini School ( XIV century ).
Of great interest are also the numerous side chapels, in which are preserved eighteenth-century blades and plaster statues by Carlo Sarti. Prized even the stucco of Ferdinando Bibiena that adorn the ceiling, and the various frescoes by Vittorio Maria Bigari.
The mortal remains of Blessed Alberto Marvelli were transferred from the the city cemetery to the church of St Augustine in 1974.
